Around 1.5 years back my LAMY 2000 fell nib-first on floor got damaged. Back then I wasn't able to muster the courage in case I end up damaging the nib beyond repair. I put some effort in finding a nibmeister but that didn't go anywhere.
Now that this event is long gone, I tried fixing the nib on my own. The nib tines were off in three ways,
- they were misaligned,
- they needed tightening, and
- the whole nib seemed to be bent in one direction
Here are the before pictures:
I basically had to use a magnifier, tissues, and a thin metal piece to do something like this from PenBoyRoy. 2k's nibs are hooded and also much smaller than regular nibs to do repairs but I was able to get somewhere. Here are the after pictures:
While there is still a gap between tines (a bulging convex gap in between) this much fix is working well enough. I tried testing this and have the following observations:
- The nib is wetter and has a slight stub like feeling to it. Originally a medium, it has moved a little towards being a broad nib.
- There is no misalignment and the smoothness is intact. In fact it feels even better maybe because of the wetness.
- The larger convex tine gap interferes with the capillary action sometimes. Specially when I start a new sentence after a minute since the ink film in between might have dried out. This is not a major problem though. I faced this twice in a full page and a little shake solves it.
- I think the bounciness has taken some hit because of the bending etc. involved in fixing it.
I should have done this long back but overall I am happy to get my favorite daily driver back in action.
